Big Lake Maple LLC started in 2015 when Ken decided to tap a few of the trees behind his parents' house as a fun little winter project. Maple sap was collected into milk jugs and boiled in pots on turkey fryers. Ken and his father, Marc, produced enough maple syrup for the family to enjoy.
But Ken was bit by the maple bug. Over the next two years, Ken upgraded his setup to two altered oil drums with hotel pans to boil off syrup. By the 2018 season we had 60 or so taps and small upgrades to the homemade evaporators. The 2019 season saw upgrades to the operation. With Ken in a new home, a new sugar shack, and a new Smoky Lake Maple Evaporator Big Lake Maple saw a massive expansion, with just over 200 taps. We are looking to produce more high quality syrup in the years to come.
